Full Description
April 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two type 22 pillbox and a further possible defensive structure are visible on aerial photographs in the dunes to the north of Castle Farm, Eccles-on-Sea (S1). The site is centred on TG 4177 2848. These structures form part of a chain of coastal defences and pillboxes all along this section of coast, such as NHER 25958-60, 32466.
The pillbox is located at TG 4179 2849 and is a hexagonal, type 22 pillbox. To the south of this, at TG 4175 2847, is a possible further structure, also visible in 1946, measuring 6.5m by 2m. This structure is not definite and it is quite hard to distinguish on the aerial photographs. Although there appears to be a rectangular raised area, casting a shadow, with a relatively recent trackway leading to it in 1946.
