NHER 27293 (Maritime record) - Possible post medieval to modern wreck

A possible wreck may be visible on aerial photographs from 1940 taken of the coast of Sea Palling (S1). The site had to be sketch plotted due lack of control points, therefore the location and size may not be accurate. The site appears to be centred on approximately TG 4297 2759. This identification is not definite as the structure can only be seen on one set of aerial photographs and these images do not show the structure clearly. If the structure does represent a wreck, its close relationship with the modern coastline would suggest that it is not of any great antiquity, probably being post medieval or modern in date.

It remains a possibility that the dark striated area that is visible on the aerial photographs is a section of the underlying peats and clays that frequently get exposed on the beach. The location of this wreck lies within the depositional arc created by the sea palling artificial reefs, which would suggest that sand may since have accumulated on top of this structure.

The structure measures approximately 50m by 13m and has a tapered end to the west, which has the appearance of the submerged prow of a boat.
