Map

November 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The remains of a post medieval sea defence bank, located just to the north of Morston village, can be determined on the 1946 RAF aerial photographs (S1)-(S2). It can also just about be seen on the 1969 Hunting Survey aerial photographs (S3), although a new bank to replace this area had been constructed by then (as shown on the current Ordnance Survey map). It is fainter still by the time the 1994 Ordnance Survey images (S4) are taken, but can still just be made out. This bank runs from NGR TG0034 4428, through TG0049 4414, to TG0060 4426.
This bank is also shown on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 1 inch and 1:10560 maps (S5)-(S6), and in part on the 2nd edition 25 inch map (S7). The sections that are not shown on the 2nd edition map are also the fainter areas on the aerial photographs. By the time the modern Ordnance Survey map was produced a new section of bank had been built, the original stretch being allowed to go in to disrepair.
H. Clare (NMP), 2 December 2002.
