Map

May 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two pillbox is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs (S1) to (S3), centred at TG 5020 1755. It is one of several anti invasion defences to have been identified in the area, part of the 'coastal crust' that characterised this stretch of coastline during World War Two. Its plan suggests that it is a Type 24 pillbox, and it is listed as such in a gazetteer of World War Two fixed defences (S4). It may just be visible on aerial photographs taken in May 1944 (S5); on later photographs (S2), (S3) and (S6) a stripe of camouflage paint or net is visible across the roof, presumably designed to disguise the structure as part of the hedge. It is still visible as a surviving structure on aerial photographs taken in 1979 (S7); it is obscured by vegetation on more recent photographs, but is perhaps just visible on an oblique aerial photograph taken in 2002 (S8).
