Full Description
May 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A small hut is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (S1) and (S2), centred at TG 5243 0732. It is first visible on photographs taken in March 1944 (S1), situated in an area of the town that had been bombed and subsequently cleared. This rather isolated location, and the fact that numerous vehicles are parked nearby on photographs taken in August 1945 (S2), suggests that it had a specific wartime use, although what this was is unclear. Some possibilities might be its use by the police, the Home Guard, or air raid wardens. The fact that a group of air raid shelters (NHER 27367) lies approximately 50m to the east may be significant. More recent aerial photographs and modern maps indicate that the site is now occupied by a modern building and the hut presumably removed or destroyed.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 17 May 2005.
