Summary

A World War Two air raid shelter is visible as an extant earth covered structure on 1940s aerial photographs. The shelter, which is either a surface shelter or perhaps semi sunken, is smaller than the large, public shelters identified in the vicinity (e.g. NHER 27374). It was probably intended for use by one or more families, or perhaps by the staff of a nearby workplace. Modern maps indicate that the site has since been built over.

Map

May 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two air raid shelter is visible as an earth covered structure on aerial photographs (S1) and (S2), centred at TG 5267 0666. Its relatively small size suggests that it was used by one or more families, or a similarly sized group of people. It is first visible on aerial photographs taken in March 1944 (S1), located in an area which by that date had already been bombed and subsequently cleared. Later aerial photographs and modern maps indicate that the site has since been built over.

The shelter consists of a rectilinear, ground level or possibly semi sunken, earth covered structure. It probably has a curvilinear or parabolic profile in section, and may be an Anderson shelter or similar. It appears to have an entrance at each end, both protected by blast walls.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 19 May 2005.
