Summary

Two large air raid shelters dating to World War Two are visible as extant earth covered structures on 1940s aerial photographs. They lie immediately to the north of Alderman Swindell First School, within the school playing field, and were presumably provided for the staff and pupils of the school, and also the residents of nearby streets. They were levelled in 1946.

Map

June 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Two World War Two air raid shelters are visible as extant earth-covered structures on aerial photographs (S1) and (S2), centred at TG 5256 0952. Their location, behind a school, suggests that they were provided both for the staff and children at the school and for civilians living in the surrounding residential streets. These large shelters appear to be semi sunken. Both have two entrances; structures at the corners of each shelter probably mark ventilation shafts. The easternmost shelter appears to be surrounded by a fence or revetment. The two shelters were levelled by June 1946 (S3).
