Full Description
June 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two barrage balloon site is visible as extant structures, buildings and earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs (S1) to (S3), centred at TG 5217 0859. On photographs taken in early 1944 (e.g. S1) the balloon itself is visible. Subsequently, at least one concentric circle of tethering blocks, together with several outliers, are visible surrounding a shallow circular pit or area of scarred ground which marks the location of the central 'platform'. A number of ancillary buildings, standing on concrete bases, and other possible structures are visible immediately to the south of the balloon. At least some of these may have provided accommodation for the balloon crew. Modern maps indicate that the site now underlies a modern housing development.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 20 June 2005.
