Summary

Areas of disturbed ground and groups of structures, reflecting World War Two military activity, are visible as earthworks and extant structures on wartime aerial photographs. They are located at the northern end of Great Yarmouth seafront, and form part of the extensive World War Two coastal defences which protected the seaward side of the town. More recent aerial photographs and modern maps indicate that after the end of the war the area was cleared and built over.

Map

June 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Areas of disturbed ground and groups of structures, representing World War Two military activity, are visible on aerial photographs (S1) to (S6), centred at TG 5306 0973. Two large areas of disturbed ground are visible on photographs taken from 1940 (S1) onwards, in the area between Byron Road and Shakespeare Road with a smaller area between Milton Road and Jellicoe Road. This disturbance includes probable weapons pits, and may represent training activity, perhaps associated with the military camp at the racecourse immediately to the north. Two groups of structures are also evident, on photographs taken from 1944 onwards. At the northern end of the site (TG 5314 0984) at least two small structures are visible, surrounded by what may be other military features. These appear quite insubstantial and perhaps temporary; their function is unknown but they might plausibly relate to a roadblock. At the southern end of the site (TG 5307 0956) is a group of huts and other structures. Their function is again unknown, but they appear to have remained in use after the end of the war, perhaps providing on-site storage and accommodation for the builders who had moved onto the site by 1946 (e.g. S7). In addition, an odd vegetation pattern can be seen at approximately TG 5311 0979; this probably represents the former site of a military installation which has since been removed and consequently has not been mapped.
