Summary

A group of World War Two anti invasion defences, comprising roadblocks, barbed wire and other structures, is visible as extant structures on wartime aerial photographs. It lies just inland of a more extensive line of beach and seafront defences (NHER 27423), and was presumably sited to defend the open ground of Crescent Gardens. For the most part the defences seem to have been removed soon after the end of the war, and there is no evidence, at least on aerial photographs, that any element survives above ground today.

Map

June 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A group of World War Two anti-invasion defences is visible as extant structures on aerial photographs (S1) to (S3), centred at TG 5310 0880. These include two lines of barbed wire laid out across Crescent Gardens. Two roadblocks are visible, one on each side of the gardens, blocking Marine Crescent and North Drive. They are visible as white lines and patches on the road surface, probably marking the location of sockets for anti-tank rails or bent pins. Adjacent to the eastern roadblock is a small square structure, protected by a blast wall on its east side; it might have served as a guard post for the roadblock. The building to its east, marked on historic maps (S4) as a shelter and consequently not mapped, may also have been put to military use. To the south, at TG 5311 0872, are two small huts, each protected on its east side by a blast wall. These are presumed to be military structures but their specific function is not known. The presence of a Light Anti Aircraft emplacement in this approximate area (NHER 32650) could not be confirmed.
