Full Description
June 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two roadblock is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs (S1) and (S2), cutting across Sandown Road from TG 5312 0829 to TG 5312 0831. It is one of several structures of this type visible on photographs taken in 1940 and 1941. Their location and rather insubstantial appearance suggests that these are the barricades, constructed of herring barrels filled with concrete, which in response to the threat of invasion were erected across roads leading from Great Yarmouth seafront during the early years of the war, (S3). Later aerial photographs indicate that in common with most of these barricades, the roadblock described here was removed before March 1944 (S4).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 29 June 2005.
