Summary

A prehistoric flint flake and a scatter of butchered cattle bones, wood and post medieval pottery fragments were recovered from the edge of the salt marsh in 2004. Whilst these finds may help to date activity in Wells harbour, none of them are in their original context, having either been washed out from all the areas around the harbour, or thrown from boats

Map

May-November 2004. Norfolk Rapid Coastal Survey.
Context 898:
Artefact scatter found loose on the silt at the edge of the salt marsh.
Items collected included an 18th to 19th century pantile fragment, 16th to 19th century pottery, fragments of butchered cattle bones, a piece of roundwood and a thick flint flake.
The dated material helps to date activity in Wells harbour, however none of this material is in its original context; the finds may have eroded out from the saltmarsh adjacent to the sloping bank, but it is more likely that they have washed up from all around the harbour (e.g. from the channel base, from bank edges, once dropped from boats, etc).
See assessment report (S1) for further details.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.421).
