Summary

A World War Two roadblock is visible as a structure on aerial photographs taken in 1940 and 1941. The structure, which cuts off Euston Road from the seafront, is one of several, rather insubstantial roadblocks (compare, for example, NHER 27422), which are visible on photographs of Great Yarmouth taken during the early years of the war. These are likely to be the barricades, constructed from herring barrels filled with concrete, erected across every street leading from the seafront to the town. As with this example, they appear to have been removed some time before the end of the war.

Map

July 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two roadblock is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs (S1and 2), cutting across Euston Road from approximately TG 5308 0791 to TG 5308 0790. It is one of several structures of this type visible on photographs taken in 1940 and 1941. Their location and rather insubstantial appearance suggests that these are the barricades (constructed of herring barrels filled with concrete) which in response to the threat of invasion were erected across roads leading from Great Yarmouth seafront during the early years of the war (S3). Later aerial photographs indicate that in common with most of these barricades, the roadblock described here was removed before March 1944 (S4).

It is notable that the roadblock does not extend across the entire road. It has been mapped as visible in 1941 (S2), with a gap on its north side. On aerial photographs taken in 1940 (S1) the gap is to its south.
