Summary

A World War Two Light Anti Aircraft emplacement is visible as a structure surrounded by an earthwork bank on aerial photographs. Huts and other structures visible to its north are likely to be associated features. There is no evidence that any element of the site now survives above ground, at least as visible from the air.

Map

July 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two Light Anti Aircraft battery is visible as an embanked and revetted structure on aerial photographs (S1) to (S3), centred at TG 5215 0988. Its form is similar to that of other light anti aircraft emplacements mapped elsewhere at Great Yarmouth (e.g. NHER 27451). The structure may have been camouflaged for at least part of the war; a faint mark is visible at this location on aerial photographs taken in March and April 1944, (S1) and (S2), while the structure itself is visible on photographs taken from May 1944 onwards (e.g. (S3) and (S4)). A group of huts and other structures visible to its north (arranged along the riverbank from TG 5206 1000 to TG 5209 0994) are probably associated with the battery site. Many of these were removed before August 1945, (S3) and (S4); no element of the site is visible on more recent aerial photographs.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 15 July 2005.
