Summary

A World War Two spigot mortar emplacement is visible as an earthwork surrounding a concrete pedestal or 'thimble' on 1940s aerial photographs. It appears to have been an isolated emplacement, probably sited to cover the railway line and Acle New Road to its west. Since the end of the war the site has been levelled, resurfaced and used as a car park.

Map

July 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two spigot mortar emplacement is visible as an earthwork and structure on aerial photographs (S1) and (S2), centred at approximately TG 5205 0822. It has a clear view to its west and southwest and was probably located to protect the approach to the railway station and Vauxhall Bridge. On more recent aerial photographs (e.g. S3) the site is occupied by a car park and the emplacement presumably levelled.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 20 July 2005.
