Summary

A group of World War Two air shelters is visible as earthworks and structures on 1940s aerial photographs. Two types are visible: surface-level structures and earthwork mounds, the latter probably covering small semi-sunken structures such as Anderson shelters. Their small size and location in a residential area, adjacent to several terraces, suggests that they were private or civic shelters intended for the use of local residents. They have been levelled since the end of the war and the site redeveloped. No trace of them is visible on more recent aerial photographs of the site.

Map

May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of World War Two air shelters is visible as earthworks and structures on 1940s aerial photographs (S1)-(S4), centred at TG 5208 0809. Their small size and location in a residential area suggest that they were intended for the use of those living in nearby houses. Two different types of shelter are visible. At the centre of the site two square surface shelters are visible. These are comparable to similar shelters mapped elsewhere in Great Yarmouth, e.g. NHER 27443 located 165m to the southeast. Whether the two shelters described here represent two square structures, or two blocks of two rectangular shelters placed side by side is not clear. To the north and south, several earthwork mounds are visible. These probably covered small semi-sunken or surface-level structures, such as Anderson shelters or similar proprietary designs. Exactly how many of these are represented is not clear. All the shelters were presumably levelled or otherwise removed after the end of the war. The area has since been redeveloped and no trace of them is visible on recent aerial photographs of the area, e.g. (S5).
