Map

July 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two air raid shelter is visible on contemporary aerial photographs (S1) to (S3). This shelter was located at TG 5197 1250 just east of Ormesby Road. It appears to have been constructed in two parts. The eastern part comprised four adjoining sections with barrel type roofs and was presumably the shelter itself. The western part had a flat concrete roof probably forming an entrance area. This was a small public surface shelter sited to serve the council houses on this section of Ormesby Road. Two council houses on the corner of Ormesby Road and Braddock Road, 80m to the south of this shelter at TG 5200 1242, were destroyed by a bomb in August 1941 without any casualties (S6). Three more public shelters were located on Braddock Road (NHER 27483). This may have been a local air raid shelter design and others of this type were present in Caister village (NHER 27487, 27500, 27501, 27507). The shelter on Ormesby Road was constructed after December 1940 (S4) but was present by May 1944 (S1). It had been demolished by July 1946 (S5).
