Full Description
July 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Three World War Two air raid shelters are visible on contemporary aerial photographs (S1 to S3). These shelters were located along the south side of Braddock Road and were centred on TG 5209 1247. The central shelter was located at this grid reference with the other two located approximately 20m to either side. These were large public surface shelters, each divided into two halves. Each half comprised a rectangular building measuring 3.7m by 2.2m with a pitched roof. A central section with a flat concrete roof joined these and formed the entrance to the shelters. A smaller public surface shelter was located a short distance away on Ormesby Road (NHER 27482). Two council houses on the corner of Ormesby Road and Braddock Road, 75m to the southwest of the most westerly shelter at TG 5200 1242, were destroyed by a bomb in August 1941 without any casualties (S6). These shelters were constructed after December 1940 (S4) and were present by May 1944 (S1). They had been demolished by July 1946 (S5). Other shelters of a similar type were present elsewhere in Caister village (NHER 27502 to 27506).
