Map

July 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two spigot mortar emplacement is visible on contemporary aerial photographs (S1 to S3). This defensive structure was located at TG 5212 1224. The central pedestal and surrounding trench and bank are clearly visible on the aerial photographs (S2). The earliest aerial photographs showing the emplacement date to May 1944 (S1). It does not appear to be present on aerial photographs dating to December 1940 (S3) although it is likely that it was constructed shortly afterwards. It occupied an apparently isolated position within an area of allotments to the east of the High Street. However, it is possible that by 1944 any associated barbed wire or other defences had been removed. The pedestal had been removed by April 1952 (S5) and the site now lies under a school playing field.
