Full Description
July 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two air raid shelter is visible on contemporary aerial photographs (S1 to S3). This shelter was located at TG 5235 1192 on the eastern side of High Street. The shelter had a barrel type roof with a flat roofed entrance area. This appears to have been a small public surface shelter sited to serve the properties on this section of High Street. This may have been a local air raid shelter design and others of this type were present in Caister village (NHER 27482, 27487, 27501 and 27507). This example differs slightly in that it has only a single barrel roof rather than the multiple roofs seen on the other shelters at Caister. This shelter on High Street appears to have been constructed after February 1941 (S4) and had been demolished by July 1946 (S5).
J. Albone (NMP), 20 July 2005.
