Summary

A World War Two surface air raid shelter is visible on aerial photographs taken between 1940 and 1945. It was a large public shelter and was located at the southern end of Clay Road. Constructed between August and December 1940, by July 1946 it had been demolished. Similar shelters were located close by and elsewhere in Caister on Sea village.

A World War Two air raid shelter is visible on contemporary aerial photographs (S1 to S3). This shelter was located at the southern end of Clay Road on the eastern side of the street at TG 5262 1193. It was a large public surface shelter, divided into two unequal rectangular parts with pitched roofs. The northern section measured 8m long by 2.2m wide and the southern part was 3.6m by 2.2m. These two parts of the shelter were joined by a central section with a flat concrete roof forming the entrance area. This shelter was constructed between August and December 1940 (S3 to S4) and had been demolished by July 1946 (S5). Another shelter of a similar type was located at the northern end of Clay Road (NHER 27503) with a third in the adjacent street, Victoria Road (NHER 27502). Other shelters of this type were located elsewhere in Caister village (NHER 27483, 27505 - 27506).
