Full Description
July 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two air raid shelter is visible on contemporary aerial photographs (S1 to S2). This shelter was located at the western end of St Julian Road on the northern side of the street at TG 5239 1157. It was a large public surface shelter, divided into two rectangular parts, each measuring 3.6m by 2.2m, with pitched roofs. These two parts of the shelter were joined by a central section with a flat concrete roof forming the entrance area. The earliest aerial photographs showing this shelter date to May 1944 (S1) although it is likely that it was constructed earlier in the war. It had been demolished by July 1946 (S3). Another shelter of the same type was located at the eastern end of St Julian Road (NHER 27506). Other shelters of this type were located elsewhere in Caister on Sea village (NHER 27483, 27502 to 27504).
J. Albone (NMP), 20 July 2005.
