Full Description
July 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A line of four World War Two bomb craters is visible on contemporary aerial photographs (S1 to S4). These were centred on TG 5276 1119 and lay either side of Beach House at the northern end of Great Yarmouth racecourse.
The four craters are present over a distance of 120m on a southwest to northeast alignment. The craters measure between 10m and 12.5m in diameter and presumably relate to four bombs of equal size. The southernmost crater, at TG 5275 1114, lay immediately to the north of the racecourse. The next bomb fell immediately to the east of Beach House at TG 5276 1119 and destroyed some of its outbuildings (S2). The northern two craters at TG 5277 1122 and TG 5278 1124 were located on part of the golf course to the north of the house. The earliest aerial photographs showing these four craters date to March 1944 (S1). They are not present on aerial photographs from February 1941 (S6) and must relate to an air raid between these two dates. The craters were still present in July 1946 (S4) but had been filled in by 1952 (S5).
