Summary

A World War Two road block is visible as a structure on aerial photographs taken in 1940 and 1941. It cuts off Standard Road from the seafront and is one of several, rather insubstantial road blocks which are visible on photographs of Great Yarmouth taken during the early years of the war. These are likely to be the barricades, constructed from herring barrels filled with concrete, erected across every street leading from the seafront to the town. As with this example, they appear to have been removed some time before the end of the war.

Map

August 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two road block is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs (S1) and (S2), centred at approximately TG 5308 0725. It is one of several structures of this type visible on photographs taken in 1940 and 1941. Their location and rather insubstantial appearance suggests that these are the barricades (constructed of herring barrels filled with concrete) which in response to the threat of invasion were erected across roads leading from Great Yarmouth seafront during the early years of the war (S3). Later aerial photographs indicate that in common with most of these barricades, the road block described here was removed by at least July 1944 (S4).

The southern end of the road block is obscured by shadow on the consulted aerial photographs and it is not possible to tell whether it extended all the way across the road.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 4 August 2005.
