Full Description
August 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Four World War Two road blocks are visible on aerial photographs (S1) and (S2), at approximately TG 5308 0716 (Lancaster Road), TG 5305 0714 and TG 5306 0708 (both St George's Road) and TG 5307 0707 (St Peter's Road). Numerous structures of this type are visible on photographs of Great Yarmouth taken in 1940 and 1941. Their location and rather insubstantial appearance suggests that these are the barricades (constructed of herring barrels filled with concrete) which, in response to the threat of invasion, were erected across roads leading from Great Yarmouth seafront during the early years of the war (S3). The southern end of the Lancaster Road block is obscured by shadow on the consulted aerial photographs and it is not possible to tell whether it extended all the way across the road. Later aerial photographs indicate that in common with most of these barricades, the roadblocks described here were removed before March 1944 (S4).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 4 August 2005.
