NHER 27549 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Cropmarks of possible Iron Age to Roman enclosure and trackway

Cropmarks of a possible Iron Age to Roman rectilinear enclosure and trackway are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are centred on TG 5087 1155. An incomplete rectilinear enclosure is centred on TG 5089 1155. It has a slightly trapezoidal plan and measures up to 65m by 52m. Internally a ditch divides the enclosure into two roughly equal halves. The ditch forming the northwest side of the enclosure continues to the southwest for a further 50m. A short section of ditch cropmark is aligned parallel to this and may define a trackway on a southwest to northeast alignment. Linear ditch cropmarks recorded 250m to the northeast appear to share the same alignment and may be of contemporary date (NHER 11656). This trackway also appears to lie roughly parallel to a trackway cropmark 600m to the northwest (NHER 27382). It is possible that the enclosure and trackway are of Iron Age to Roman date. These cropmarks are crossed by undated north to south aligned linear ditch cropmarks (NHER 27550).
