Summary

A World War Two ambulance station, is probably visible as two garage buildings containing several vehicles on aerial photographs taken in 1944 and 1945. More recent aerial photographs and modern maps indicate that the site is still occupied by a garage, and that the buildings visible on the 1940s photographs may remain in use.

Map

August 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A probable World War Two ambulance station is visible as two adjacent buildings, at least one of which contains several vehicles, on aerial photographs (S1) and (S2), centred at TG 5287 0930. The site, named North Denes Garage on modern maps, was probably Morris's Garage, which is recorded as having been used as an ambulance station during the war (S3). The buildings appear to have been partially derelict by 1944 (S1), perhaps as a result of bomb damage. Vehicles are visible parked within the roofless southern building on the photographs taken in 1945 (S2). The main part of the modern garage occupies the same footprint as the 1940s complex, and it is possible that parts of the wartime buildings remain in use.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 16 August 2005.
