Summary

A World War Two surface air raid shelter (or group of shelters erected as a block) is visible on mid 1940s aerial photographs. It was a rectangular structure and was similar to other surface shelters erected elsewhere at Great Yarmouth. It lay within the grounds of a school (one that has now closed) and may have provided protection for staff and pupils. Aerial photographs taken in 1947 indicate that it was removed soon after the end of the war.

Map

August 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two rectangular surface air raid shelter (or group of shelters) is visible on aerial photographs (S1 to S2), centred at TG 5271 0697. It lay within the grounds of a former school (S3) and may have been provided for the protection of its staff and/or pupils but it does not seem large enough to have held the school’s entire population. Whether the visible structure represents a single shelter or up to four smaller shelters erected side by side is also unclear. It was removed by April 1947 (S4).
