Summary

A probable World War Two structure is visible on 1940s aerial photographs. It was a small square structure or building and may have been used by the Home Guard, an Air Raid Precautions warden or the fire service, for example. It stood on a site that had been bombed and then cleared. Aerial photographs taken in March 1948 indicate that it survived for some time after the end of the war. It is probable that the structure was removed or destroyed when the site was redeveloped for housing in the 1950s.

Map

August 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A small square structure visible on 1940s aerial photographs (S1 to S4), centred at approximately TG 5260 0692, was probably associated with the civil defence of Great Yarmouth during World War Two. It is first visible on photographs taken in March 1944 (S1), when it occupied a relatively isolated location on a cleared bombsite. Its exact function is unknown but was presumably related to the civil defence of the town and it could perhaps have been used as a warden’s post or an observation post, for example. Although it remained standing for some years after the war (S3 to S4), it was presumably demolished when new housing was built over the former bombsite in the 1950s (for example, (S5)).
