Full Description
August 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A group of up to three World War Two air raid shelters is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5267 0680. The shelters were located just inside the town wall (NHER 4294), in an area now known as Adam and Eve Garden. They consisted of elongated mounds, aligned approximately north to south, which probably covered structures with a curved or parabolic shape in profile. The western ‘block’ appears to have consisted of two shelters erected side by side. At up to 13m long the shelters are larger than most of the family sized shelters, such as the Anderson, mapped elsewhere at Great Yarmouth. They were probably semi communal shelters, used by local residents and workers. They are not visible on more recent aerial photographs (for example (S2)) and were presumably levelled after the end of the war.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 26 August 2005.
