Full Description
August 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of undated linear ditches, possibly post medieval field boundaries, are visible on aerial photographs (S1) to (S4). These cropmarks are centred on TG 5000 1363. To the west of Nova Scotia Road a single linear ditch cropmark is present between TG 4971 1357 and TG 4987 1360. The alignment of this ditch is parallel to the post medieval field pattern and it is likely that it is a field boundary of contemporary date. To the east of the road two parallel ditch cropmarks are present on a roughly southwest to northeast alignment. The southernmost of these extended for 178m between TG 4991 1356 and TG 5009 1360. A rectangular pit measuring 15m by 6m was present half way along this ditch at TG 5000 1359. The northern ditch also extended for 462m from the road in the west. This ditch is cut by the modern field, and parish, boundary to the north. Although the western end of this ditch was present as a boundary on the Caister-on-Sea enclosure map its date is uncertain. The fact that this ditch is crossed by the parish boundary suggests that it is probably of medieval or earlier date. It is possible that it marks an earlier line of the parish boundary itself. The southernmost of these ditches is also likely to be a field boundary of possible medieval to post medieval date. The western end of these ditches is cut by the modern realigned course of the A149 road. Other ditch cropmarks, probably also post medieval field boundaries are present further to the south and north (NHER 27597, 27598).

May 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of field east of Nova Scotia Road and north of Nova Scotia Cottages.
A range of fragmentary linear anomalies were identified, a number of which appear to correspond with cropmarks in this group. These include both of the parallel east-north-east to west-south-west aligned linear cropmarks mapped in this field. A perpendicular anomaly to the east presumably represents an associated feature, although it is not associated with a mapped cropmark.
A rectangular discrete anomaly at TG 5000 1359 clearly corresponds with the probable pit mapped at this location.
