Summary

Three World War Two air raid shelters are visible as earthworks and structures on 1940s aerial photographs. They were located in a yard behind a building (or row of buildings) on Swanston’s Road and presumably provided protection for people working or living there. The site has been built over since and the shelters have probably been levelled.

Map

September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Three World War Two air raid shelters are visible on aerial photographs (S1 to S2), centred at TG 5302 0585. They presumably served the needs of those living and/or working in the building on the Swanston’s Road frontage to their immediate southwest. The exact design of the shelters is not clear. They are visible as low earthwork mounds, with access provided by a flight of steps, protected by a wall, at their southwest ends. More recent aerial photographs and modern maps indicate that the site has since been built over and the shelters presumably levelled.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 21 September 2005.
