Summary

A World War Two road block is visible as a structure on aerial photographs taken in 1940 and 1941. It cut the southern end of Harbord Crescent off from the seafront. It was one of several, rather insubstantial road blocks which are visible on photographs of Great Yarmouth taken during the early years of the war. These are likely to have been the barricades, constructed of herring barrels filled with concrete, erected across every street leading from the seafront to the town. As with this example, they appear to have been removed some time before the end of the war.

Full Description

September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two road block is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs, (S1 and S2), centred at approximately TG 5306 0611. It was one of several structures of this type visible on photographs taken in 1940 and 1941. Their location and rather insubstantial appearance suggests that these were the barricades (constructed of herring barrels filled with concrete) which in response to the threat of invasion were erected across roads leading from Great Yarmouth seafront during the early years of the war (S3). The barrier was removed before March 1944 (S4).
