Full Description
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Fifteen probable World War Two air raid shelters are visible as earthworks and structures on aerial photographs (S1), centred around TG 5295 0610. The shelters lay in close proximity to each other, in the gardens of 6, 8, 10, 14, 18, 28, 30, and 36 Harbord Crescent, 39 and 48 Barkis Road, 1, 3, 5 and 27 Micawber Avenue and 45 Peggotty Road. The majority of the shelters are visible as earthwork mounds, probably covered, semi-sunken structures such as Anderson shelters. Some, such as those at TG 5296 0614 (8 and 10 Harbord Crescent), appear to have had elaborate entrances incorporating what are probably blast walls. Two of the probable shelters (at TG 5296 0615 and TG 5295 0612) do not appear to have had any covering. These are likely to have been surface shelters although in the absence of other evidence the possibility that they were merely outbuildings cannot be ruled out. There is no evidence on more recent aerial photographs that any of the shelters now survives above ground and they were probably levelled soon after the end of the war.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 28 September 2005.
