Summary

A World War Two pillbox is visible on aerial photographs, partially buried within the dunes at Waxham. There are several other pillboxes within close vicinity protecting the access from the beach, see NHER 16793 and 32641. This pillbox appears to have two faces, covering both sides of the beach from the pass through the dunes, possibly constructed so as to provide enfilading fire along a beach to prevent inland progress.

Map

A World War Two pillbox is visible on aerial photographs, partially buried within the dunes at Waxham (S1 and 2). There are several other pillboxes within close vicinity protecting the access from the beach, see NHER 16793 and 32641.

The pillbox is centred on TG 4423 2642 and measures 8.5m by 3.5. It appears to have two faces, covering both sides of the beach from the pass through the dunes, possibly constructed so as to provide enfilading fire along a beach to prevent inland progress. This may be a type 2/20 pillbox although this is not definite. The pillbox can only seen clearly in 1952 (S2), as it is partially buried in 1946 (S1). The structure cannot be identified on later aerial photographs.
