Map

September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A line of possible Second World War bomb craters is visible on aerial photographs, along the edge of the dunes at Waxham (S1). The site is centred on TG 4466 2592. There appears to be a chain of six pits, between 2 and 3.5m in diameter and each surrounded by a fringe of spoil. These features have the appearance of bomb craters but their location and close spacing seems strange. They could represent a chain of weapons pits. Additionally in 1955 (S2) possible circular, concrete structure appears to be visible within the easternmost pit and possibly also something within the central pit. This gives it the appearance of being a spigot mortar emplacement, however these internal features are not visible in 1946 (S1), indicating this may be a later re-use or dumping of material within an existing hole.
S. Massey (NMP), 29 September 2005.
