Summary

The cropmarks of a possible trackway and associated ditches of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs, to the north of Waxham Road, Sea Palling. The archaeological origin of these features is not definite as the field contains other cropmarks that appear to relate to drainage, and it is therefore possible that channels of a similar function produce these cropmarks.

Map

September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible trackway and associated ditches of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs, to the north of Waxham Road, Sea Palling (S1). The site is centred on TG 4349 2683. The archaeological origin of these features is not definite as the field contains other cropmarks that appear to relate to drainage, and it is therefore possible that channels of a similar function produce these cropmarks.
The cropmarks consist of two parallel linears, 105m long and 10m apart, running from approximately TG 4344 2684 to TG 4354 2680. A further two parallel linear ditches meet the northern of the pair at an oblique angle, giving the arrangement a slightly ‘herringbone’ appearance. This shape is reminiscent of drainage scheme patterns, although the features do have a more convincing archaeological appearance than the more obviously drainage related cropmarks within the field.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 September 2005.
