Full Description
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A group of four roughly parallel cropmark ditches, possibly representing former field boundaries of unknown date, are visible on aerial photographs, to the east of Black Wall trackway, Sea Palling (S1). It is possible that these ditches are of a pre-medieval date, as they show no relationship to the surrounding landscape, which is largely likely to represent the medieval and post medieval pattern of fields and boundaries. The site is centred on TG 4366 2647, although the ditches are quite dispersed and therefore this point does not coincide with any archaeological features.
The ditches are all roughly aligned southwest to northeast and are between 100m and 160m apart. The linears vary in length from 70m to 125m for the two outer ditches. The central linear consists of several ditch fragments in alignment, running from TG 4354 2639 to TG 4378 2649. The northern end of the ditch appears to have a possible double ditched element, 4.5m apart. It is possible that this indicates a trackway running along the side the boundary ditch, although this feature is not visible along the rest of the fragmentary ditch.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 September 2005.
