Full Description
October 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A cropmark of a small sub-rectangular enclosure of unknown date is visible on aerial photographs (S1). This cropmark is located at TG 4924 1288. The enclosure is sub-rectangular in plan with slightly rounded corners. It measures up to 8m by 6m and has a 2m wide gap in the ditch, which may represent an entrance, on its northern side. This enclosure is located 5m to the southwest of a ring ditch of a Bronze Age round barrow (NHER 17592). Although it is a little on the small side, it is possible that the enclosure is a ditch surrounding an Iron Age square barrow. Alternatively it could be a foundation trench associated with a small timber building of unknown, possibly Anglo Saxon date. A similar-sized sub-rectangular enclosure is located within the barrow cemetery 450m to the east (NHER 8645).
