A possible World War Two or modern structure visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1). The structure is located at TG 1416 4145 is situated at the entrance to a chalk pit, now disused. On the 1946 RAF aerial photographs the floor of the pit shows some recent activity although it does not necessarily appear to be in use as a quarry. The structure measures 8.5m by 3m. It is possibly that the building relates to the working of the pit, although it is not marked on the 2nd edition map (1902-7, 25") (S3). This would suggest that it is not post medieval in date. It is possible that the building is World War Two in date, as the it is present in April 1946 and has been removed by late June 1946 (S2), suggesting that it could have been a temporary military structure.
S. Massey (NMP), 18 June 2003.
