Map

June 2003. Norfolk NMP.
Square structure visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1). It located at TG 1430 4124 and measures 6m across and the walls appears to be up to 0.5m wide. The northwest corner is not clearly visible. The function and date of this structure is not clear. It is possible that it is post medieval and possibly related to the various quarries and limekilns (SMR 6307) in the area. However if it were a limehouse or industrial building you would expect it to be on the 2nd edition map (1902-7, 25") (S3). The structure does appear to have a trackway leading up to in 1946. This may suggest it is World War Two in date and possibly a pillbox, potentially a type 20. Reference to Ordnance Survey from 1969 reveals that this structure has been removed and all that remains is a square hollow (S2).
S. Massey (NMP), 18 June 2003.
