Map

June 2003. Norfolk NMP.
Large rectilinear and linear parchmarks of unknown date visible on Ordnance Survey aerial photographs from 1968 (S1). The site consists of a 47m long L-shaped parchmark running from TG 1377 4238 to TG 1375 4244 and another major linear continuing from TG 1374 4244 to TG 1372 4243. The width of these marks varies from 2m wide to 7.5m. It is not clear what has caused these features or even if they are definitely archaeological. It is possible that they mark the former edge of the woodland belt to the south, Wellborough Wood. Another, but very remote, possibility is that they mark the former foundation trenches associated with the old Sheringham Hall site (see NHER 6297), however this does not seem very likely as their shape is not consistent with a hall site. It is possible that they relate to an old garden feature or pre-Park layout (see NHER 22881). The fact that this feature also leads towards a large pit could suggest that it might be in some way related to the quarrying and the transport of material.
S. Massey (NMP), 23 June 2003.
