Full Description
January 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A group of World War Two gun emplacements, possibly part of an anti-aircraft battery and weapons pits on Kelling Heath, visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1). These features would have formed part of the military training site on the heath, although they presumably served a defensive purpose as well. The slight arc of emplacements to the east of the site share some similarities with the layout of an anti-aircraft battery, although the state of earthworks in 1946 may suggest that the emplacements were never actually use in an operational sense.
The earthworks are not especially clear due to surrounding vegetation and poor photo quality. By 1950 this area has been cleared and turned into arable so no clearer images are available of the structures themselves. To the east of the site there is a dispersed group of gun emplacements. A roughly lozenge shaped emplacement is visible at TG 1023 4090, measuring 10m by 9.5m and this is defined by a bank up to 1.5m wide. To the south of this at TG 1025 4087 is another possible gun emplacement, 10m by 8m, defined by two opposing curvilinear banks. At TG 1026 4085 is another probable emplacement, although the earthworks are not clear. An oblong sunken area measuring 6m by 4.5m is visible, this may have elements of surrounding banks to the north and south. To the west of this, located at TG 1024 4084, is another structure that can not be identified clearly. It appears to be a rectangular sunken area surrounded by two opposing semi-circular banks, measuring 6m by 5m. At TG 1027 4083 is a much clearer structure; a circular embanked emplacement with an entrance to south west, measuring 5m across.
To the west of the site are three more isolated features. At TG 1018 4083 is an oblong sunken area measuring 5m by 6m. At TG 1008 4083 is a circular hollow 7.5m in diameter and surrounded by a slight bank. At TG 1004 4090 is a probably horseshoe shaped emplacement, measuring 7m by 6m with an entrance to the north.
