Map

January 2004. Norfolk NMP.
World War One to Two military earthworks on Kelling Heath, visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1). This site consists of a dense cluster of weapons pits and small practice slit trenches. Each pit has not been mapped as the entire heath is covered with these features, instead an extent of area has been defined for each group. The majority of these two and three man pits are constructed in lines of up to seven pits, for example running from TG 1069 4146 to TG 1072 4138 and from TG 1063 4133 to TG 1065 4129. These pits and trenches are all quite fresh and are presumably World War Two in date. However there are some that seem to be earlier, possible World War One. Several sections of crenellated trench are visible and these do appear to be World War One. The fact that some ditches associated with another World War Two site (SMR 38422) appears to cut across one of the trenches would also support this. This trench runs from TG 1076 4142 to TG 1081 4145, another from TG 1089 4138 to TG 1088 4132 and from TG 1078 4126 to TG 1070 4125, TG 1076 4150 to TG 1080 4152.
S. Massey (NMP), 12 January 2004.
