Map

January 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A large area of First and Second World War pits and trenches relating to training exercises on Kelling Heath, visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1-2). This site has been defined by an extent of area, rather than mapping all visible earthworks. In particular the weapons pits and small slit trenches have generally not been individually mapped as they are so ubiquitous. The area covers approximately 1.5km². The extent of the site covers many features which have been assigned individual number and mapped, such as the World War One trenches NHER 38414, NHER 38416-20. Also particularly dense areas of weapons pits and trenches, distinct as groups within the larger spread, have also been recorded separately, such as NHER 38420. To the southwest of the area several lines of barbed wire were mapped centred on TG 1013 4086. Centred on TG 0948 4124 are a set of recent tracks leading towards a wooded area to the west. This may indicate that further World War Two military activities were taking place within the woods.
S. Massey (NMP), 12 January 2004.
