Summary

Earthworks of a possible post medieval water meadow are visible on aerial photographs. A group of ditches and channels are present on both sides of a watercourse. It is possible that some or all of these relate to a post medieval floated water meadow. However, some of the ditches may have had a solely drainage function. Part of the site was under arable cultivation in 1988 and it is likely that the earthworks in that area have been levelled.

Map

November 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of a possible post medieval water meadow are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). These earthworks are centred on TG 4535 1242. Parallel linear ditches and channels are present in pasture fields on either side of a watercourse leading westwards from Thrigby towards the Muck Fleet Drain. The clearest group are centred on TG 4540 1245 and comprise two rows of north to south aligned channels either side of a west to east channel. Adjoining this are to the west, and centred on TG 4520 1244, are a group of southwest to northeast aligned channels. To the south and east of these earthworks are areas containing ditches and channels aligned parallel and perpendicular to the main watercourse. It is possible that some or all of these ditches and channels relate to a post medieval floated water meadow. However, some of the ditches may have had a solely drainage function. The main area of these earthworks, to the north of the watercourse was under arable cultivation in 1988 and the earthworks had presumably been levelled (S4). Other areas within this group were still under pasture at that date but it is not clear if the earthworks survive.
