Full Description
November 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A rectilinear cropmark of a bank, with an external ditch in places, is visible on aerial photographs (S1) to (S3), centred at TG 4531 2441. It might define part of a rectilinear enclosure. Given its general appearance, such an enclosure might date to the post medieval or even medieval period, and perhaps pre-dates the enclosure and drainage of this area which was formerly part of Waxham Marsh (the remaining part of which is shown on Faden's map of 1797, (S4)). Alternatively, it might reflect the presence of a drain, again probably of post medieval date. It could even be a modern land drain, although it appears to be overlain by other modern agricultural features (also probably land drains and not mapped) visible on the aerial photographs taken in 1946 (S1). The same interpretation has been put forward for a very similar cropmark visible approximately 125m to the south (NHER 42128).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 8 November 2005.
