NHER 42199 (Monument record) - Possible Saxon or medieval saltern mound

An earthwork mound, possibly a Late Saxon to medieval saltern, is visible on aerial photographs (S1 and S2). This mound is centred on TG 4578 0701 and was formerly covered by farm buildings. The mound has an irregular elongated plan and lies on a southwest to northeast axis. It measures up to 91m long by 24m wide and is bounded by drainage ditches on its southeast and northeast sides. It is likely that this is a saltern mound of Late Saxon to medieval date. Pottery of this date has been recovered from the mound (NHER 35369). A farmhouse and associated buildings were located on the mound. These were marked on the second edition Ordnance Survey 25 inches to the mile map (S3), were still present in 1946 (S4), but were mostly demolished by 1971 (S1). Other farmhouses in the marshland, including Six Mile House (NHER 21103) and Lockgate Farm (NHER 35368 / 42174), have also been found to have been built on possible saltern mounds of this period. A further possible saltern mound is present immediately to the north (NHER 42196).
