Summary

The cropmarks of fragmentary parallel ditches or drains of possible post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs, to the south of Sea Palling village. Their function is suggested by their shared alignment with drains associated with NHER 36133, which is an area of field boundaries, enclosures and drains with possible medieval origins, to the immediate north. These features are likely to be earlier than the post medieval ditches or drains that are also visible within this field (NHER 42073).

Map

September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of fragmentary parallel ditches or drains of possible post medieval date are visible to the south of Sea Palling village (S1). The site is centred on TG 4285 2649, although this point does not correspond on the ground to any of the ditches. These features are likely to be earlier than the post medieval ditches/drains that are also visible within this field (NHER 42073). This is suggested by their shared alignment with drains associated with NHER 36133, which is an area of field boundaries, enclosures and drains with possible medieval origins to the immediate north. This area is marked as fen on Faden’s map of 1797 (S2), although it is possible that some minor boundaries and drains had been cut on Palling common by this point.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 September 2005.
