Summary

The cropmarks of a series of linear and curvilinear ditched features are visible on aerial photographs, to the south of Sea Palling village. These are likely to be boundaries and drains of late medieval to post medieval date. One of these boundaries lines up with the edge of the Palling Common on Faden’s map of 1797.

Map

September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of fragmentary parallel ditches or drains of possible post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs, to the south of Sea Palling village (S1). These are likely to be boundaries and drains of late medieval to post medieval date. The site is centred on TG 4256 2640. One of these boundaries, running from TG 4259 2634 to TG 4259 2640, lines up with the edge of the Palling Common on Faden’s map of 1797 (S2). This section of the boundary has been removed by the time of the 1839 Palling Tithe map (S3), however the southern part still survives. The cropmarks indicate that the northern section of the boundary had a parallel ditch or drain 15m to the west. A further series of cropmarks are located to the west, which consist of a ditch perpendicular to the main boundary, with three ditches joining it. It seems likely given the location that these are drainage ditches.
